Linux professional Institute (LPI) remodeling to a membership-primarily based company | killexams.com actual Questions and Pass4sure dumps

The Linux skilled Institute (LPI) Board announced in February it can be transforming to a membership-primarily based employer. This includes LPI South Africa. LPI, which beget a kindly time 20 years of service to the Linux group this 12 months, aims to greater serve its certificate holders and to guide those who beget relied on its certifications as a validation of learning over the closing two decades.

LPI's desires through the years has been to assist steer careers and entrepreneurship by means of proving the learning of practitioners working with open source software. Its focal point has been on Linux distribution neutrality, practicing methods, and merchandising open supply.

under the brand fresh association, certification holders will quickly be able to develop into LPI individuals, which capacity they'll beget the skill to settle on the LPI Board of administrators and steer the path of the organisation.

community efforts in Linux certification | killexams.com actual Questions and Pass4sure dumps

June 5, 2000Web posted at: 10:19 a.m. EDT (1419 GMT)

(IDG) -- I should silent be studying. I may silent be in a school room. I should silent be cramming for my examination. but i'm not. i'm sitting prerogative here at my computer dutifully scripting this column, even though i know that at about this time next week, i'll be in Austin, Texas, taking the primary of two stage 1 LPI Linux certification tests. i carryout know i'm not going to carryout very neatly, however this is ok; i am not obligated to humiliate myself via revealing my ranking. After taking each exams for level 1, although, I may silent beget a gorgeous kindly thought of what is considered a suitable degree of capabilities for a junior Linux device administrator.

Linux certification is a concept that has been around for a long time and is now coming to fruition. There are two primary entities working to supply Linux professionals with credentials. the first is SAIR; the 2d is LPI, the Linux expert Institute. in case you aren't everyday with Linux certification, i fancy to recommend Eileen Cohen's excellent analysis, which looked in LinuxWorld previous this 12 months. The URL is given under in the resources ingredient of this text.

The dreams of both primary companies are very equivalent. The fundamental dissimilarity is that SAIR is a for-profit agency offering both testing and practicing, whereas LPI is a nonprofit company focusing solely on testing. Wave applied sciences, which recently purchased SAIR, is actually an incredible provider of IT practising.

each LPI and SAIR are seeking for to advance Linux within the commercial enterprise. each has impeccable credentials of its personal. one of the crucial brightest lights in the open source world serve on SAIR's advisory board. LPI is readily a share of the Linux neighborhood doing some thing that needs to be performed.

Evan Leibovitch, who has been worried with Unix and Linux for a very long time, and who has written about Linux for the past five years, is without doubt one of the founders of the LPI. Evan requested lately if i would fancy to engage the primary-degree LPI examination, presently in beta. I hesitated a day earlier than accepting the offer, for no antecedent apart from concern of failing.

firstly I hoped that i might be capable of engage the check online, however the checks are most effective given in controlled environments, so that individuals don't gain it an open ebook examine or beget proxies engage the exam for them. however VUE (digital university firms), which administers the certification checks for LPI, has three areas in the Austin area, so finding a nearby trying out headquarters was now not a problem. i am booked for 10:30 a.m. on may also 31. deem first rate ideas for me.

community efforts

i'm always amazed and a bit in awe of what the individuals within the Linux neighborhood engage it upon themselves to do. LPI isn't any exception. Now about 1,000 powerful, and fewer than two years historical, it is completing beta trying out on its degree 1 certification application as I category. gain positive you be in a position to rate your LPI degree 1 certification as early as this summer. work is already underway on the degree 2 assessments, and a third degree, for senior directors, will comply with.

Evan has been concerned with Unix for decades, and with Linux considering 1995. As a journalist, he has written about each, and he at the flash writes a weekly column on Linux for ZDNet. He advised me that he can nonetheless be awake when he first received hooked by using Linux. It changed into at the November 1995 Unix Expo in manhattan, following Novell's announcement that it become selling its Unix hobbies to SCO. Evan referred to, "I spent most of the relaxation of the day on the cubicles of Caldera and pink Hat, which had very tiny compartments at that display. And really that was the birth of my getting hooked."

The latest LPI company is blended from two separate mailing lists and a third Linux neighborhood certification venture, Digital Metrics. Evan changed into no longer convinced with without hardship writing about Linux and beget become an energetic member of the community. He helped to discovered CLUE, the Canadian Linux users change, and it became from CLUE's conventional mailing checklist that the primary roots of the LPI regarded.

Evan talked about that someone on the record requested what Linux necessary to gain it into the mainstream. The reply that came up most commonly became certification, and shortly the topic warranted a list of its own. among the early contributors on the listing changed into Dr. Tobin Maginnis, founder and president of SAIR.

In 1998, Dan York wrote an editorial about certification within the Linux Gazette, and it generated adequate pastime that a mailing checklist shaped round it as smartly. now not lengthy afterwards, one among Linux's roving ambassadors, Jon "maddog" corridor, delivered Evan and Dan. The result become a merger of the lists and the formation of LPI.

LPI has made tremendous strides in view that its formation a year and a half in the past. For one issue, individuals beget rethought how LPI would deal with the problem of checking out for distribution-selected abilities. firstly, LPI deliberate to present two checks, one time-honored and one distribution selected. Candidates would beget everybitof needed to engage the commonplace exam, after which settle upon the distribution for which they wanted to be verified partly two.

but as LPI contributors looked more carefully at the comments received from the group concerning the kinds of issues that a junior, intermediate, and advanced Linux admin should comprehend, they found out that the locations where the distributions had been several -- essentially their installation and altenative of GUI -- weren't areas that crucial to be validated that deeply.

in its place, the individuals at LPI beget designed one component of the 2d examination to contend with differences between dpkg and RPM equipment administration. Evan spoke of, "It changed into no longer most economical to beget an exam that might cover primary admin tasks that failed to contend with package administration." but he brought that in case you be awake of simplest dpkg and not RPM, or vice versa, you might be capable of pass.

If i'm not completely humiliated by way of the examination, i could engage the second half as smartly and provide as many particulars about it as i am allowed. I cannot file on any selected questions, of course, however i may cowl issues, longevity, and the Look at various atmosphere.

looking ahead

looking in opposition t the future, LPI plans to beget the 2nd degree of checking out, for the intermediate Linux device administrator, attainable in lower than a year. No timetable has been set for the third-degree check, which might be launched someday after the 2nd. Evan additionally told me that LPI is working closely with the Linux commonplace ground (LSB), so that when LSB finalizes its specification, it turns into the basis for the LPI checking out.

Will SAIR and LPI ever merge? I carryout not accept as actual with it would be a rank aspect in the event that they did, however I in my opinion don't note how it can ensue. A founding principle of LPI was the separation of training and checking out, and SAIR is owned by means of a working towards company. So in certification, identical to so many other elements of Linux and the open source neighborhood, we're blessed with alternative.

My tackle everybitof of here's that folks fancy Evan and Dan and everybitof the others who beget contributed time, funds, ideas, or effort to LPI are doing the entire leisure of the Linux group a really excellent provider. The enterprise is keen no longer best for Linux itself, but for qualified authorities to manage it. The certification of a pool of Linux authorities can only aid to velocity its deployment.

ArchLinux Tutorial, share 1: Basic ArchLinux Installation | killexams.com actual questions and Pass4sure dumps

This post is the first a the string of three posts on installing and configuring Archlinux with I3 Windows Manager on a hardware machine.

  • Basic ArchLinux Installation

  • X Window System and I3 Installation

  • I3 Configuration

  • Introduction

    I beget been an ArchLinux user for the past 10+ years and was running ArchLinux on everybitof my desktops and laptops. The terminal time I deployed Arch on my desktop was almost six years ago and I never reinstalled it since my first installation on a brand fresh (at that time) HW. The system is up-to-date with the latest kernel and apps.

    uname -r4.20.6-arch1-1-ARCH

    All these years, I was running XFCE and I am very delighted with a very light desktop manager. Recently, I felt I needed a change for my desktop environment and decided to try something new. In addition, after everybitof these years of experimentation in installing and uninstalling software packages, my system started to feel sluggish and unhurried in a few instances.

    So I decided it was time to carryout a clean install and, in the process, to try a fresh GUI. I decided to try I3, as I was looking at it for some time but didn't find time until now to Look into in more detail.

    Download Archlinux ISO

    ISO for Archlinux can be downloaded from Arch Linux Downloads. Select the closest mirror to you. The latest image at this date of writing is 2019.01.01, contains Linux Kernel 4.20, and is only 602.0 MB in size.

    Once the image was downloaded you can write on a CD-ROM (if you silent beget one) or a USB stick.

    Pre-Installation Checks

    The current set up assumes you beget EFI-enabled BIOS.

    Once booted from a CD or USB stick, verify that the installation supports EFI.

    ls -la /sys/firmware/efi

    Verify that there is available disk space. Note that they assuming they are installing on a /dev/sda disk; your disk cognomen may be different, so pay proximate attention.

    dmesg | grep sda && \lsblk Initial Pre-Installation Configuration

    You can install Arch from local media CD/USB stick, but my recommendation is to consume online installation with the latest updated packages. For this, they will exigency to configure MirrorList for the Archlinux to consume during installation.

    nano /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist Manual Mirrorlist Configuration

    Uncomment the mirrors located closest to you.

    nano /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

    Generate a Mirrorlist by specifying the ilk of the mirror and location.

    Visit the Mirrorlist generator in the web browser on another computer and generate a Mirrorlist. Here's an case of the generated Mirrorlists that are near my location.

    Server =https://sgp.mirror.pkgbuild.com/$repo/os/$arch Server = http://mirror.nus.edu.sg/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch Server = http://mirror.0x.sg/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch Server = https://mirror.0x.sg/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch Partition Disk

    We will consume two partitions: one partition for EFI 512 Mb, and one partition for relaxation of the data.We can partition in a more granular way depending on the requirements. For simplicity's sake, they consume the minimum required for the two partitions.

    Partition EFI gdisk /dev/sda Clear Partitions Table

    We are using Google DNS, which has an SLA of 100%, but you can consume other DNS IP entry points, fancy DNS=1.1.1.1 1.0.0.1.

    Restart and reconfigure the network services:

    systemctl enable systemd-networkd && \ systemctl enable systemd-resolved && \ systemctl start systemd-networkd && \ systemctl start systemd-resolved && \ systemctl desist dhcpcd && \ systemctl disable dhcpcd && \ ln -sf /run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf && \ ls -la /etc/resolv.conf && \ resolvectl status

    Check the resolver configuration:

    Add the time sync systemd service:

    timedatectl set-ntp actual && \ timedatectl status

    Add an entry into the hosts file:

    cat /etc/hosts && \ echo “127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost” >> /etc/hosts && \ echo “::1 localhost.localdomain localhost” >> /etc/hosts && \ echo “127.0.0.1 arch.localdomain arch” >> /etc/hosts && \ cat /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ::1 localhost.localdomain localhost 127.0.0.1 arch.localdomain arch Install Useful Linux Tools pacman -Syyuu && \ pacman -S p7zip python unzip pygmentize docker \ vim htop git jq rsync tmux bash-completion keychain \ mlocate wget words lsof which lunge pciutils lshw pacman-contrib reflector

    Update the latest and newest mirror.

    Arch Linux uses a list of the mirrors where everybitof packages are synchronized using pacman -Syyuu.The file that keeps everybitof mirrors is located in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, and it is a kindly conception to configure the Mirrorlist file with the mirror that's fastest and closest to you. They will consume the reflector instrument that will configure the file automatically.

    reflector - verbose - latest 200 - number 5 - sort rate - reclaim /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

    Start the Docker daemon:

    systemctl enable docker && \ systemctl start docker Create a fresh User and Group

    It's not a kindly conception to race this as a user. The best exercise is to configure a separate user that can be used as default and a root user in case you exigency to configure system files.

    groupadd -r autologin && \ useradd -m -g users -G wheel,storage,power,docker,autologin,audio -s /bin/bash your_user_name && \ passwd your_user_name Add sudo Access to the User visudo %wheel ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL

    Login into the newly created user:

    su - your_user_name Install the AUR Package Manager

    Users of Archlinux can consume packages maintained by the community, called AUR. In order to consume AUR, they exigency a instrument similar to pacman to allow us to install packages from AUR.

    A few AUR installers are available and, over the years, I beget used a few, fancy yaourt and packer. Recently, I switched to YAY, and, so far, it works very nicely and without any issues.

    Installing YAY mkdir sources && \ cd sources && \ git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/yay.git && \ cd yay && \ makepkg -si && \ yay - editmenu - nodiffmenu - save

    Optimizing the system for faster compilation of the source-based packages:

    grep “COMPRESSXZ=(xz” /etc/makepkg.conf && \ grep “#MAKEFLAGS=\”-j” /etc/makepkg.conf && \ sudo sed -i ‘s/COMPRESSXZ=(xz -c -z -)/COMPRESSXZ=(xz -c -T 8 -z -)/g’ /etc/makepkg.conf && \ sudo sed -i ‘s/#MAKEFLAGS=”-j2"/MAKEFLAGS=”-j9"/g’ /etc/makepkg.conf grep “COMPRESSXZ=(xz” /etc/makepkg.conf && \ grep “#MAKEFLAGS=\”-j” /etc/makepkg.conf

    In the "COMPRESSXZ=(xz -c -T 8 -z -)" -T 8 represents the number of CPU cores and you can find the reform number by running "lscpu | grep "CPU(s):" | grep -v NUMA"

    Optional: Add Color to the pacman Output

    The final palpate is to add some color to the package manager:

    grep “Color” /etc/pacman.conf && \ sudo sed -i -e ‘s/#Color/Color/g’ /etc/pacman.conf && \ grep “Color” /etc/pacman.conf

    In the next article, they will install and configure X window and i3 Desktop manager.

    Lutris Is Working On Snap And Flatpak Installers For Linux Gamers | killexams.com actual questions and Pass4sure dumps

    In 2019 there are very few Windows-exclusive titles you can't race on Linux. In share that's thanks to Lutris, an incredible solution for Linux gamers, allowing people to install and launch thousands of Windows games without having to worry about messing with a complicated Wine backend. Combined with breakthrough tools fancy Steam's Proton, it opens a massive compatibility doorway. However, for Linux beginners, installing and setting up Lutris itself can be more daunting than getting the games up and running. Thankfully, that's changing soon.

    On Twitter yesterday I commented that the fresh Lutris homepage redesign looks sharp, and asked if there was any casual for a Snap version in the near future. I got a string of exciting responses. First up was Lutris:

    And those plans emerge to be progressing nicely. Alan Pope, Snap Advocate at Canonical (the makers of Ubuntu), jumped into the thread to state "I beget a Snap here. Just needs a exiguous refinement."

    Then, speaking privately with Lutris founder Mathieu Comandon, I scholarly that both Snap and Flatpak versions are high on the priority list, and should arrive after Lutris version 0.5.1 is released.

    But why is this a stately deal? prerogative now, in order to install a version of Lutris that gets updated automatically (which is well-known due to the ever-improving nature of the software and compatibility tools within) people using Ubuntu and many other Linux distros exigency to first add a repository. deem of a repository as an additional source for software. To carryout so, you typically exigency to lunge into the Terminal and bang out a string of text commands. They Look fancy this:

    Series of terminal commands to add a repository for Lutris.Lutris Gaming

    Then race a sudo apt update. And finally, install Lutris with sudo apt install lutris.

    I've started embracing the command line, but this is not touchstone for people fresh to Linux, or for people who simply want to beget the selfsame "click and go" suffer they beget on Windows.

    Snaps and Flatpaks give users that experience, but it's infinitely more elegant. We're talking about software that's literally a one-click install. Snaps and Flatpaks are basically utilities that let developers easily deploy their apps universally, across any Linux distribution. You can already find thousands of them including Spotify, Discord, Skype and Slack. Plus they're updated seamlessly and automatically in the background.

    Lutris is already terrific. I consume it to play games fancy Magic The Gathering: Arena and Battlefield 1. In the coming months it's going to enmesh even better and attain a lot more people.

    The bottom line? Having a one-click Lutris installer that automatically updates lowers the barrier to entry. It makes the exercise of gaming on Linux less obscure, much fancy what Valve has done with Steam's Proton.

    Client virtualization, share 1: Is it the past or the future? (With a retrospective on XenClient) | killexams.com actual questions and Pass4sure dumps

    Recently, there seems to be a renaissance of interest in client virtualization, a topic that was also charged a decade ago, particularly around products fancy Citrix XenClient. Today, they are seeing solutions that beget many elements in common with it.

    Over my next two articles I’ll cover why type-1 hypervisors got so much interest back in the day, give a case study on the history of XenClient, talk about what has changed, and engage a Look at some emerging solutions. I interviewed a number of people, including Ian Pratt, Tal Zamir, Dan McCall, and David Gaunt.

    The “two worlds” concept

    My initial recollection was that the conception behind client virtualization was simple: race a hypervisor on a laptop, and then race two VMs with separate copies of the OS on top of it. An enterprise could issue a laptop to an employee, and then the employee would work in the trusted VM, where the enterprise had locked down the apps, added everybitof the antivirus software they wanted, and so on. And, if users wanted to check Facebook or personal email, they could enter the personal VM.

    This is a type-1 (or bare-metal) hypervisor model; and of course, many people are also intimate with type-2 hypervisors, where a hypervisor and guest OS race as software above the natively installed OS. The debate on hypervisors and their merits raged several years ago, but it’s not much discussed these days, although they beget plenty of articles that define the differences for those curious.

    Type-2 hypervisors fancy VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop are current today, mostly in compatibility consume cases, e.g., running Linux apps on a Windows PC or running Windows apps on a Mac. However, the products that I am focusing on are the type-1 variety, with the interest driven by security.

    First, let’s Look at why type-1 gets everybitof the security interest.

    Trusted root and rings

    An OS usually runs its kernel code in Ring 0. (Protection rings are a computer science concept that report different levels of access to resources.) Ring 0 is the level with the most privileges and interacts most directly with the physical hardware, such as the CPU and memory.

    Above this, you typically find less privileged functionality, such as device drivers in Ring 1 and user applications up in Ring 3. Lower rings are able to obstruct higher ones, and only allow controlled access or a subset of functionality via hardened interfaces.

    There are also rings below Ring 0, from -1 (as in negative) to -3 down at the hardware level, which again, can police higher rings. Overall, anything lower in the stack can know what the state of the world should Look like, and present the rings above with a limited or contrived version of the world.

    A user application (typically in Ring 3) running on a compromised OS isn’t secure (and probably can’t even detect this), because the OS underneath the app can divulge it whatever it wants, intercept the application data, copy the screen, key log, and the like.

    Therefore, the road to actual security is to enmesh in as low as practicable in the ring hierarchy, using minuscule hardened and trusted bits of code and very limited interfaces, so you can detect and obstruct anything trying to mess with higher rings. This ensures that code in higher rings can reliance on functionality made available to them by lower rings. Something running in Ring 0 may be able to reliance on functionality in Ring -1, or even down to hardware (e.g., Intel TXT) to query if the system is known to be compromised.

    Today, type-1 hypervisors typically race privileged code at lower levels, as well. The hypervisor is race in Ring -1, and things fancy UEFI plug-ins race in Ring -2. You can essentially beget a mini-hypervisor in Ring -2, providing a level of security services, while the plenary hypervisor in Ring -1 deals with everybitof the driver voodoo and complexity. A mini-hypervisor at Ring -2 can watch for anything related to VMEXITs and can mess with EPT and shadow/virtual EPT to implement cut/paste-like restrictions.

    On boot, Rings -3 & -2 boot, and if the OS supports a hypervisor at -1, then it boots, too. Since modern Windows embeds Hyper-V, if the switch for Hyper-V is installed, Windows boots into Hyper-V mode, which gets Windows into VM mode (or another hypervisor can be used). As long as a product gets in early enough, micro-hypervisor elements can be popped in, and nested hypervisors are perfectly feasible.

    Type-1 hypervisors include Xen, XenServer, Hyper-V, VMware ESXi, etc., and for security-focused companies, this is definitely the way to lunge when looking to secure a trusted root as low down the stack as possible. (This was the route taken by the original XenClient XT product.)

    Type-2 hypervisors race on top of an OS. An OS has a large footprint to secure, so shoving one between the hardware and the hypervisor makes securing the hypervisor much harder.

    The tower and topple of XenClient: The genesis

    Now that you’ve had a thorough lesson on hypervisors, let’s Look at Citrix XenClient.

    I spoke to Ian Pratt, who led the progress of XenClient. Ian was a founder of the open-source Xen hypervisor project, which now is included in major virtualization platforms fancy Citrix XenServer, Amazon AWS, and Huawei’s hypervisor. He joined Citrix when they acquired XenSource, and he’s now the CEO and co-founder of Bromium, which I’ll talk about in the next article.

    Talking to Ian, it became clear that while the XenClient prototypes developed around 2008/2009 had been driven by interest from security and intelligence agencies, a large internal driver was the potential for a solution that could simplify management and patching for the ever-growing number of laptops, mobile devices, and workstations, at a time when patching Windows wasn’t easy.

    The original XenClient product became known as XenClient XT, and was released in 2010. XenClient XT was a “microvisor” (micro hypervisor) based around the Xen type-1 hypervisor. fancy the original model I described, you would install on a laptop, and the user would race two VMs: one containing their “personal laptop” (the untrusted world) and one containing their “corporate laptop” (the trusted world). This approach was attractive to very high-end security customers, pecuniary corporations, and federal security consume cases.

    It everybitof got very confusing in 2012 when Citrix acquired the NXTop product by way of their Virtual Computer acquisition. NXTop eventually got rebadged and evolved into XenClient Enterprise.

    XenClient: The results

    Security-wise, everybitof those involved seemed to agree that XenClient XT was disappointing. Whilst the model worked as per the theory, the corporate secure VMs were only as kindly as their installed security. In other words, they were just fancy any other corporate laptop. The VMs used were persistent and, once compromised, issues persisted beyond a separate login. Users doing perfectly legitimate tasks continued to pick up viruses and other nasties, and managing everybitof the antivirus and other security tools was as cumbersome as ever.

    Meanwhile, a lot of the issues with the management of laptops went away: the Microsoft patching process got better, the patches themselves got more reliable, and a clutch of really kindly tools around testing/deployment appeared (e.g., SCCM, BigFix, Alterian, and Rapid 7).

    On the other hand, using products fancy XenClient meant adding more infrastructure and uphold staff that was just for laptops.

    Hardware compatibility was a huge issue for everybitof the XenClient products. Dan McCall, who was the CEO of Virtual Computer, gave me insight into the scale of the challenge:

    “It is simply the case that everybitof the different variations of hardware required a tremendous investment in QA and engineering. Unlike Microsoft, who reliance on PC vendors to carryout their hardware QA, Virtual Computer Inc. (our minuscule 35 person company) had to carryout QA on everybitof the laptop PCs their customers wanted to support. This forced us to create a Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) that covered barely 10% of the market. The older the hardware, the worse the problem (we were buying obsolete PC’s on EBay to carryout QA with!). Eventually they secured Lenovo and a relationship with an innovative senior executive, able to waiton us w/with the QA issues as well as with Lenovo’s hardware suppliers by asking them to provide us with Linux drivers for their fresh hardware (think of how many different versions of something as simple as a touch-pad there are). That benign of market influence can’t be obtained by a startup!”

    Plus, there was another huge issue here: asking the user to select a trusted/untrusted world and to gain an assessment on whether something is a dubious concept at best.

    You know where this went. The uptake was low, and Citrix axed XenClient in 2015. XenClient XT was open sourced as OpenXT, presumably because of some continued demand or contractual obligations to customers. (If Citrix open sourced every product they’ve culled, it would be expensive—so this was unusual.) The OpenXT repositories continue to be updated and actively developed; open-source software, particularly in security, is current for many federal agencies, so I imagine it may be these sorts of organizations that are using and developing it.

    Citrix stopped selling XenClient Enterprise, turning to focus on type-2 hypervisors with DesktopPlayer. DesktopPlayer for Mac had started as a product to give Citrix some sort of coverage for Mac endpoints with XenClient-like consume cases. When XenClient Enterprise’s demise was announced, DesktopPlayer was silent Mac only, although they covered rumors of a Windows version, which eventually appeared. terminal year, DesktopPlayer seems to beget silently gone to EOS (End of Sale) on August 31, 2018, with an EOL (End of life) date of September 28, 2019 (see the Citrix product uphold matrix for details).

    It was a different time

    Dan provided some stately insight into the sentiment of shareholders and venture capitalists back in 2010 to 2012. Basically, Windows PCs fell out of style with the advent of the iPhone and iPad. Today, with a billion PCs deployed and everybitof needing to be refreshed, it seems arduous to imagine, but at the time, PCs and laptops felt fancy the past and a saturated market. Due to the technology challenges, this was going to be a very long journey and one that Citrix opted out of.

    Both Ian and Dan also mooted that cloud and VDI were silent quite niche at the time and security and data breaches just weren’t high enough enterprises priorities. Often, customer interest in XenClient was for minuscule numbers of seats for high-value users. Back in 2010, there weren’t relentless security infringement headlines, and corporate regulation and governance (i.e., who is legally on the hook for a breach) weren’t high on the agenda  for most organizations.

    David Gaunt, who is now at Nutanix but was a Citrix SE from 2007 to 2014, confirmed this:

    “I never understood the exigency for it and neither did the customers I spoke to, as an SE at Citrix. Very niche consume case and while the conception was sound, it was a inanimate end. It seemed fancy an conception looking for a market that was never there. Per app and device management took over (MDM, etc.) and that killed it from what I saw. No doubt microvisors beget their market but it’s not mainstream enough for a company of Citrix’s size to race with it.”

    Wrap up

    This article may be ending on a negative note, but that’s only half the story. Next week we’ll recrudesce with the resurgence of client virtualization.
