Working together, these products will profit companies more easily deploy management systems for mixed Windows NT® operating system and UNIX environments and manage the rapid growth of Windows NT Server throughout corporations.
The combination of HP OpenView with Systems Management Server will give customers a highly scalable and distributed enterprise management solution. As a result, customers will be able to coordinate central policy, administration and problem management with the more distributed requirements of supporting the managed desktop.
“The success of Windows NT Server has driven IT managers’ exact for fully integrated enterprise tools for managing their Windows® environments,”said Olivier Helleboid, general manager of HP’s OpenView program.“Today’s announcement represents HP and Microsoft’s commitment to provide enterprise management solutions that suit every aspects of customers’ management requirements.”
“Working at the enterprise level, customers expect management products to travail together to provide streamlined solutions that are easy to deploy and use,”said Bob Kruger, general manager, systems management products at Microsoft.“With the flat of integration between OpenView and Systems Management Server announced today, customers will be better able to manage their mixed Windows NT and UNIX environments and seize control of their rapidly growing, highly distributed Windows-based systems.”
In this first facet of a multiphase project to migrate HP OpenView products toWindows NT, HP and Microsoft gain worked together to integrate the next versions of HP OpenView IT/Administration and HP OpenView IT/Operations with Systems Management Server. As a result, OpenView operators will be able to employ Systems Management Server’s highly distributed services to manage PCs as a fully integrated portion of the overall enterprise.
With today’s announcement, these OpenView products will now recognize distributed systems managed by Systems Management Server as OpenView nodes. As a result, OpenView operators will be able to employ information from Systems Management Server to map desktop and Windows NT Server configuration changes and employ Systems Management Server to execute changes at a convenient time. Operators using OpenView as the enterprise manager will be able to access the Systems Management Server relational database to explore the Systems Management Server systems hierarchy and retrieve inventory records.
OpenView operators will also be able to instruct Systems Management Server to ration software and monitor the status of software deployments. When Systems Management Server detects problems, current IT/Operations templates will notify an OpenView operator with a detailed message describing the problem and suggesting confiscate corrective actions.
To accomplish these current levels of integration, HP will deliver enhanced IT/Administration and IT/Operations agents and templates that are specifically designed for installation with Systems Management Server. Microsoft plans to ship these OpenView agents with its next major release of Systems Management Server; HP will remain responsible for licensing and supporting this technology.
Demonstrated by HP for the first time at NetWorld+Interop ’96 in Atlanta, these enhancements will be available with the next versions of IT/Operations and IT/Administration in mid-1997. Over the coming months, HP also plans to release complete Windows NT-based versions of HP OpenView Network Node Manager, OmniBack II and PerfView/MeasureWave.

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (NASDAQ“MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software for personal computers. Hewlett-Packard has been delving deeper and deeper into crossplatform enterprise systems management, through a sequence of technology investments in OpenView. Now, users and analysts are definitely emotion the impact.
When it comes to heterogenous environments, OpenView is a tenacious player, according to Bill Emmett, solutions manager at HP. "OpenView compares favorably to IBM Tivoli and CA-Unicenter on the basis of both cost effectiveness and modular, plug-and-play architecture," he contends. Aside from its myriad API interfaces, Emmett emphasizes OpenView's champion for myriad operating systems and multiple "open standards."
Emmett's enthusiasm isn't surprising, since vendors typically tout their own products. Some users and analysts, though, are equally gung-ho.
Tim Hagan, VP of IT operations and engineering for Zurich Life, says it took him and a pair of other people less than 90 days to deploy OpenView in a complicated muster hub environment.
Zurich Life is using OpenView to manage about 110 servers and 65 databases in two physical locations. The systems are running HP-UX, Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, and Microsoft Windows 2000, NT, and XP. Zurich is operating OpenView on HP-UX servers, but the systems management platform runs on Sun Solaris and Microsoft Windows servers, too.
No Longer "Just a Network Node Manager"When Hagan first came to Zurich Life in January of 2000, the insurance solid was silent using HP's ragged Network Node Manager. "That was one of the reasons I was hired. It didn't afflict that I'd had prior success with OpenView in an earlier job. I knew that OpenView has a very open architecture, and that it would very quickly tie in with their (other) existing platforms and tools," according to Hagan.
The current OpenView product does include Network Node Manager as one of its myriad optional modules. Used for network element discovery, layout, inventory and performance, it connects with HP OpenView Operations for cross-discipline administration.
"The ragged Network Node Manager (alone) was a very reactive environment, though. They kept hearing about outages from their internal customers. We'd tangle the symptoms and descriptions after the events had already happened. We'd terminate up looking not so good, and sometimes we'd need to bring in a bunch of people to profit fix the problem," Hagan says..
"With OpenView, however, we've become instantly proactive. They can preclude problems, and we're awake of problems that Do occur before the users even know about them. If a customer calls, they can say, 'A distress ticket has already been created, and a page has been sent out. Such-and-such application will be up in an hour or two.'"
HP needs to be a software playerSome critics quarrel that OpenView can't be every that censorious to HP, since HP's hardware revenues far outweigh the software side. However, industry analyst Jasmine Noel disputes that conclusion.
Noel points to a number of industry trends affecting HP, as well as other industry providers. "Margins on computing hardware retain declining; computing-based trade services are now censorious to enterprise success; and successful delivery of trade services requires management of the entire compting stack," she says.
"The computing stack in every great enterprise continues to be heterogenous," adds Noel, who is principal at JNoel Associates. "This combination of trends requires HP to gain a heterogenous management solution (in order to present) a credible software epic to enterprise customers."
Noel also likes the investments HP is making in "intelligent" management, for more efficient administration, and in industry partnerships, for better interoperability with other vendors' products.
OpenView's EvolutionEmmett notes that HP first moved into systems management with Network Node Manager in 1988. "We used what technology was available at the time, including SNMP. They then started adding more and more capabilities," he adds. Acquisitions helped HP to build up OpenView. In 1997, for instance, HP bought Prolin, the Netherlands-based maker of the IT Service Manager suite.
At this point, HP's great OpenView family revolves largely around Operations Monitor and Performance Monitor. Each monitoring product has agents running on every major platforms, ranging from Linux to MVS.
Operations Manager is the central enterprise console, for an end-to-end view of the enterprise that includes client PCs, the network, applications, and database. Performance Monitor provides tools such as a graphing function and reports for monitoring and analyzing resource utilization.
For better interoperability, OpenView complies with standards ranging from SNMP and RMON to OMI. "We often sit on standards committees, in fact," according to Emmett.
HP also offers a set of templates, known as Smart Plug-Ins (SPIs), for configuring third-party tools. "The Smart Plug-In knows where to find the log files in Oracle, for instance," Emmett illustrates.
The HP Operations Manager can also be combined with OpenView Service Navigator, Service Information Portal, Service Desk, and Internet Services, as well as with Network Node Manager, for example.
Service Navigator uses information captured in the SPIs to let administrators drill down to discover root causes for potential problems. If a warning flashes because application performance is degrading, the administrator can drill down through the database and storage system to find out that a disk is overheating, for instance, according to Emmett.
Service Navigator also includes "impact analysis" capabilities for determining which databases and applications are likely to suffer, and the flat of severity of the impending hit. OpenView uses color coding to betoken six different severity states.
Administrators can automate response sequence, such as paging an administrator or failing over to a backup server, for example. An optional add-on known as Advanced Security provides authentication and data encryption.
As Emmett sees it, OpenView has two main sets of competitors: "framework vendors" (such as IBM Tivoli and CA) and "point tool vendors." BA Patrol, he says, "falls somewhere in between."
Deployment in 88 days"My company granted us 180 days for OpenView deployment. I set up a much more aggressive schedule of 90 days, but they were able to finish up in 88 days," Hagan says. Hagan worked on the rollout at Zurich Life with one fulltime consultant, plus one employee. The employee spent 50 percent of his time on the OpenView rollout, and the other half of his time on Unix administration.
"One censorious piece was to invent certain they got the requirements for alarms monitors and thresholds from every of the associated systems managers. They didn't want to be paging someone at 3 am, just because server capacity had reached 90 percent," Hagan recalls.
Hagan claims that he's gotten extensive cooperation from every across his company. "Our e-commerce team thinks OpenView is wonderful. What you can Do with OpenView is limited only by your imagination."
Zurich Life has already used HP's SPIs to integrate Oracle, Sybase SQL Server, and several third-party management tools. Hagan says the company is now testing SPIs for Lotus Notes and Ciscoworks, for instance.
Zurich did reckon other systems management products, such as Tivoli, Unicenter, and Patrol. "Some products, though, don't provide data that's as meaningful, and some gain longer implementation times. They didn't gain a huge staff to roll this out," Hagan points out.
More automation on the way"Windows, Solaris, and HP-UX. Those are the server environments that systems management products typically quicken on, although sometimes you tangle one or two others, depending on the vendor's partnerships," Noel observes..
Beyond that, Noel doesn't want to compare OpenView with other systems management products. "Each one is too different," she maintains.
The analyst is especially impressed, though, with HP's future plans for simplifying systems and automating service flat management with OpenView.
"HP's message it their target market is that corporate IT departments that operate as trade partners will be more successful, less recumbent to costcutting measures, and less likely to be outsourced," according to Noel.
"HP has two overall messages about its solutions. The first is (that) HP solutions profit corporate IT deliver better services with fewer resources and lower costs. The proverbial silver bullet HP OpenView offers is service flat management. HP expands the definition of service flat management from the current understanding of monitoring and alerting on SLA violations to one of a process of defining, provisioning, managing, and optimizing the resources delivering the service," according to Noel.
"HP's second message is (that) their solution set is both comprehensive and innovative. (The message) is comprehensive in that HP has solutions for every aspect of service flat management and continues to add capabilities. (It is) innovative in that HP's newest products address how current technologies change the management requirements."
HP's three-year roadmap calls for further improvements to integration, infrastructure, and storage management; progress of a Service flat kick Model; and delivery of products "that aid in the diagnostic process," the analyst notes.
On the integration side, for instance, HP is now in the process of consolidating its multiple integration APIs into a unique toolkit for third party vendors.
With the Service flat kick Model, HP is looking to "grab every the information, and establish it into a common format, so it's easier to share information as you spin from one step in the process to the other," according to Noel.
In terms of infrastructure coverage, HP is working on Web Services standards and protocols such as J2EE, WebMethods' OMI initiative, and Microsoft's .NET servers.
Some of OpenView's latest products, such as OpenView Transaction Manager, can monitor J2EE and .NET services and applications. For the future, though, HP plans to build in more intelligence.
"You can monitor 100 things in J2EE, but which ones are most important? perquisite now, you only tangle that by using (OpenView) for a while. Also, you can trace the path a transaction took through .NET, but you can only Do this after-the-fact. HP wants to bring this into realtime," she says.
HP now offers SPIs for WebMethods, Microsoft .NET, and SunOne Web Services - SOAP Engine, for example. At least 40 SPIs are provided, every told.
Other recently added OpenView products include Service Activator, for automating the delivery of services offered by hosting providers; and Data Protector, a replacement for OpenView Omniback II.
Data Protector is designed for integrated management of disk-based and tape-based recovery across multiple OS, applications, and storage architectures. Administrators can manage both recovery time and recovery point objectives.
HP integrates CompaqWith the Compaq acquisition, HP is now working on integrating Compaq's products into its systems administration mix. Compaq Insight Manager will continue to be used only in Wintel environments, since its administration capabilities are hardware-oriented, Emmett says.
However, Compaq's TeMIP product for telco administration is now being ported by HP from Tru64 - which was originally DEC Unix - to HP-UX and Solaris, Emmett adds.
Essentially, editions of OpenView for HP-UX, Solaris and Windows offer the very capabilities. "But we're also taking edge of the characteristics of each platform. The Windows version was designed for Windows from the ground up. It makes employ of Windows drag-and-drop, for instance," Emmett says.
OpenView is Windows 2000-certified. On he Windows side, the product also uses Microsoft technologies that include MMC, WMI, CIM, DCOM, Visual Basic scripting, HTML/XML, HTTP/SOAP, Internet Explorer, and IIS.
"Meanwhile, we're also keeping their eyes open for other potential server platforms, including Linux," adds HP's Emmett.

Windows 2000 offers a number of ways to manage your servers and user applications when you aren’t, or can’t be, physically present. Come along for a guided tour, including a peek into the .NET future.
As striking in appearance as they might be, server rooms invent poor travail environments. They’re pandemoniac and cold. travail areas are cramped. You can’t bring in food or coffee. And everyone thinks they own your time if you travail in there. It’s much more convenient to manage your server scope from your cubicle. Or better yet, from your home. Even better still, from a cabana near a tropical beach. This requires a set of remote administration tools and a very flexible manager.
Remote admin tools descend into two general categories. In-band tools connect to your servers across the very network used by clients. Out-of-band tools allow you to connect using a part network or alternate data communications paths. Of the two, in-band remote management tools generally provide a richer environment, so let’s notice at those first.
In-Band Remote Management Tools You employ in-band management every day without really thinking about it. For example, I quicken vigorous Directory tools on my desktop that I employ to connect to domain controllers when I want to create or modify objects. These are specialized features though. Windows 2000 comes with several general-purpose, in-band tools designed to provide a more or less comprehensive management interface. Each tool has its strengths and weaknesses. Let’s notice at them in ascending order of flexibility.
Telnet As convenient as GUI-based tools can be, sometimes you just want to Do a quick chore at a command prompt without every the fuss of a complete Explorer session. For example, let’s drawl you tangle a phone muster in the carpool van on the passage to work. A user’s forgotten his password perquisite before the start of a “critical trade meeting that could net the company billions.” You roll your eyes, then connect to the office via a wireless PDA, open a console session on a domain controller, and kick off a script or employ the net user command to reset the user’s password. Total time? Maybe 15 seconds, and you didn’t even gain to set down your espresso.
The most venerable command-line console is telnet. Win2K has a telnet service already loaded. It’s simple enough to start. Just enter net start tlntsvr at a command prompt. If you want the service to start automatically at boot time, employ the Service.vbs script in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit with the syntax:
cscript service /n tlntsvr /m automatic
You can configure the telnet service by typing tlntadmn at a command prompt. The operation of this utility differs in Windows XP compared with Win2K. In Win2K, you tangle the following listing:
C:\>tlntadmnMicrosoft ® Win2K ™ (Build 2195)Telnet Server Admin (Build 5.00.99201.1)Select one of the following options:0) Quit this application1) List the current users2) Terminate a user session ...3) panoply / change registry settings ...4) Start the service5) desist the service ilk an option number
Windows XP (and .NET) gives you a more informational listing:
C:>tlntadmnThe following are the settings on localhostAlt Key Mapped to 'CTRL+A' : YESIdle session timeout : 1 hoursMax connections : 2Telnet port : 23Max failed login attempts : 3End tasks on disconnect : NOMode of Operation : ConsoleAuthentication Mechanism : NTLM, PasswordDefault Domain : COMPANYState : Running
You can employ tlntadmn on XP to manage other machines as long as they’re running XP or Windows .NET. The Win2K version only manages the local machine.
By default, Win2K telnet accepts only NTLM (NT LanMan) authentication rather than the transparent text authentication normally used by telnet. NTLM appears to be superior, but as Joel Scambray and Stuart McClure point out in their seminal security book, Hacking Windows 2000 Exposed, NTLM authentication is vulnerable to man-in-the-middle exploits, especially when exposed by a service such as telnet where it’s simple to grind through passwords. Account lockout doesn’t travail for failed telnet logons. One solution would be to rewrite Windows telnet to employ Kerberos, but Microsoft hasn’t done this yet.
You can employ tlntadmn to change the authentication manner from NTLM to both NTLM and touchstone password. If you Do this, be certain to protect the password exchange and the data stream by using a Secure Shell (SSH) product. SSH creates an end-to-end encryption path that protects both the clear-text authentication and the subsequent data transfers. This is similar to the passage basic Web authentication is protected by SSL/TLS. SSH also uses public key technology to symptom communications digitally for authentication and nonrepudiation. Microsoft doesn’t provide an SSH implementation in Win2K. A pair of third-party packages are available:
You can also enable IP security (IPSec) to protect authentication and data streams between servers, but SSH can be targeted specifically to telnet, ftp and other command-line options.
Once you’ve configured telnet to employ touchstone authentication, you can employ alternate clients. For instance, you can employ the Hyperterm utility in virtually any version of Windows as a telnet client. Configure the session to employ TCP/IP (Winsock) and point the session at the DNS denomination or IP address of the telnet server. device 1 shows an example.
Text Editing Over TelnetAs convenient as telnet might be for making a connection to a server, as a management tool it’s only as genuine as the command-line utilities available at the server. Microsoft enhanced the Win2K command line quite a bit compared to Windows NT, but a few touches are silent lacking. The most glaring deficiency is the want of a genuine console editor, the accent here being on “good.” Edit and edlin will travail in a telnet console, but neither of them is exactly a systems administrator’s best friend. (Note: If you employ Edit in a telnet console, employ Ctrl-A as an alternative to the Alt key to access the menus. You can change this shortcut key using tlntadmn. Windows .NET drops champion for edlin.)
A better console editor is available. It’s called vim, which stands for VI iMproved. (You can learn more about this freeware at www.vim.org.) If you haven’t worked with vi, it may seize you a while to tangle used to vim, but once you play around with the keystrokes, they feel natural. If you want to tangle grave about using vim, I highly recommend Vi Improved—VIM, a bespeak by Steve Oualline (New Riders). (Note: The Resource Kit has a version of vi but it requires running the posix subsystem, which isn’t recommended because it wasn’t included in the C2 security evaluation. Windows .NET doesn’t include a posix subsystem.)
