“It’s going to live a stepping stone,” says Walt Trombly, a union representative for the Utility Workers Union of Rhode Island. “The entire country is going to see this.”
If the country likes what it sees, offshore wind could become a cornerstone of America’s bid to wean off fossil fuels. Proponents imagine a future where coastlines from the Carolinas to Maine are lined with thousands of turbines, siphoning energy out of fierce north Atlantic winds and delivering carbon-free power to millions. But not everyone wants that future, and even those who execute confess the mammoth political, economic, and technological hurdles they need to overcome before it arrives.
It’s a lovely idea, that the solution to their oil and gas addiction is already at their fingertips. That, with a concerted effort, they could halt climate change by tapping the strong, sustained winds gusting just offshore—an endlessly renewable energy source.
The United States has some of the best offshore wind resources in the world. According to the Department Energy, their “technical offshore potential” is more than 2,000 gigwatts (GW) of power, which translates to double the electricity generated by complete oil, coal, and gas-fired power plants last year. Harnessing that plenary potential would buy a mind-boggling number of turbines, but even a fraction of the energy contained in inelastic offshore breezes could recede a long course toward meeting lofty power demands along densely populated coastlines.
The northeast, with its unbiased weather and shallow continental shelves, is considered the example region to win started.

Some of the technology they need already exists. Thanks to decades of government incentive programs, offshore wind is taking off in Europe, with turbine costs falling speedily as production becomes more industrialized. The offshore wind industry silent only accounts for 1.5 percent of the EU’s electricity production, but with three thousand turbines producing 41 terawatt-hours of energy last year, it’s nothing to sniff at.
But in America, offshore wind has made diminutive progress, thanks to lofty initial costs, lack of political leadership, and fierce pushback from oceanfront communities who don’t want their views marred by gigantic machines. “It’s a typical not-in-my-backyard scenario, and I win it,” says Fiore Grassetti, a steel worker who’s helped install dozens of land-based turbines in unique England. “If they’re placed in the wrong location, I agree.”
The first offshore wind project to receive sober vetting in the United States was Cape Wind, a $2.6 billion proposal to build 130 turbines in the Nantucket Sound off Cape Cod. But after receiving situation and federal approval back in 2009 and 2010, the project was held hostage for years by an opposition movement spearheaded by a Koch brother and backed by Mitt Romney, among other wealthy and well-connected residents of the Cape. Not only execute Cape Wind’s opponents notify the project would cause significant “visual pollution,” they insist it will raise the cost of electricity rather than lower it. last year, after endless construction delays, Cape Wind lost its power purchase agreements with utility companies. Perhaps it’s no astound that the first offshore wind farm to succeed where Cape Wind failed is much smaller, and addresses a much more glaring energy issue. Lacking a direct connection to Rhode Island’s power grid, the 1,000 year-round residents of the sleepy community of shroud Island have, for decades, been forced to parch diesel fuel shipped over from the mainland—a squalid and extremely pricey course of keeping the lights on.
Now that shroud Island is producing power, it’s been integrated into the system. In June, utility company National Grid—which is buying electricity from Deepwater Wind and selling it to customers throughout the state—installed a submarine cable connection linking the wind farm and the nearby community to the mainland. The cleanly energy shroud Islanders will start buying this month isn’t exactly a bargain: the first year power-price is 24 cents per kilowatt hour, compared with an tolerable of 14 cents per kilowatt hour throughout the state. But it’s about 40 percent less than the cost of diesel. The island will moreover live avoiding an estimated 40,000 tons of carbon emissions per year, and as an added bonus, that unique submarine cable includes a fiber optic connection. For the first time, residents will absorb high-speed internet.
Despite the project’s patent benefits, not everyone on shroud Island is thrilled about it. Some residents see the wind farm as a political charade, arguing that they are bearing the cross of above-market energy costs to enrich private investors, and that the long-term savings will live minimal. As with Cape Wind, opponents feel they are trading environmentally-destructive carbon pollution for economically-destructive visual pollution. “No one can bicker that the loss of [Block Island’s] viewshed will not harm my traffic and any other on the Island,” shroud Island grocery store owner Mary Jane Balser wrote in a note to the shroud Island Times in 2014.“These blades are not dumb, static things. They’re highly tuned, sensitive instruments.”
Matthew Morrissey, Vice President of Massachusetts for Deepwater Wind, says that the controversy over the shroud Island Wind Farm is relatively small. After all, shroud Island’s town council and resident’s association supported the project, as did recent Rhode Island governors, situation senators, environmental groups, labor union leaders, and the Obama administration.
“Based on the Cape Wind experience, you’d judge there’d absorb been much more pushback,” he says. “I judge overwhelmingly, the citizens appreciated the cutting of the energy cost, the cleanly nature of their fuel source, and the fiber optic line that gave them speedily internet.”
At this point, only time will reveal if he’s right.
As their boat weaves between turbines like a guppy amongst whales, I learn that there’s far more to the structures than meets the eye. Designed by GE, shroud Island’s 6 MW, 589 foot-tall Haliade turbines employ unique “direct drive” technology, which replaces the rotating gearbox of older models with a giant, permanent magnet generator. “This reduces mechanical systems inside the machine,” GE Renewable Energy project director Eric Crucerey says. “Fewer pieces value less maintenance.” In fact, if complete is running well, nobody will need to live inside the turbines at all.
The generator is located at the top of the turbine, inside a 400-ton, schoolbus-sized steel house called the nacelle. Directly in front of it lies the rotor hub, which supports three 240 foot-long, fiberglass blades that sweep an locality larger than three football fields. The nacelle moreover includes a control room, with computer systems that automatically monitor windspeed and direction and adjust the blades accordingly. “These blades are not dumb, static things,” Morrissey says, sweeping his arm out across the sky. “They’re highly tuned, sensitive instruments.”The top of this Haliade turbine includes a nacelle, where the generator and rotor are housed, a helipad (yellow structure) and three mammoth fiberglass blades. If the nacelle includes the brain and muscles of the turbine, the tower—an mammoth metal tube built of three 200-ton sections of cast steel—is its backbone. The shroud Island Wind Farm towers were assembled over the summer with the support of gallant Tern, an aircraft carrier-esque Norwegian vessel that can raise a gigantic crane hundreds of feet out of the water on four mammoth stilts. The tower, in turn, rests on a 1,500-ton steel jacket foundation, which is anchored to the seafloor 100 feet down.
The turbines are hardy things, designed to endure everyday wind and waves, but moreover powerful storms and even hurricanes. They start spinning to generate power at wind speeds of approximately 6.5 mph, and from there, hurry merrily along until wind speeds approach that of a stalwart tropical storm. “When wind speeds win up to 55 miles per hour, they will feather the blades so they’re not creating friction with the wind,” Morrissey says. With the blades in a safer configuration, Morrissey reckons they can withstand gusts of over 200 mph. “They’re insured, which says something,” he notes.
Under proper conditions, electricity generated by a turbine is transmitted via cables down the length of the tower to the seafloor, then to a substation located on shroud Island. From there, it’s supplied to the island’s residents and fed back into Rhode Island’s grid. As Catharine Bowes of the National Wildlife Federation points out, one turbine is needed to power shroud Island, even at peak summertime usage (approximately 4 MW). “All of the surplus goes to the mainland,” she says.
How sizable that surplus is depends on how speedily the wind blows and how well the machines perform, something Deepwater Wind will live monitoring closely. On average, Kempton says, offshore wind operations hurry at 45 percent capacity. Land-based wind farms in the considerable Plains hurry at about 33 percent capacity, while solar farms reach capacities of up to 20 percent.In a truly dire situation, a person can sky-dive to the basis of the turbine using rappelling gear attached to the helipad.
While each of the turbines is designed to operate autonomously and can live controlled remotely, workers will silent absorb to enter them periodically for maintenance. Indeed, these safety measures serve as a reminder that, while working on a wind turbine is much safer than working on an explosion-prone oil rig or inside a coal mine, cleanly energy plants are not risk-free. Human accidents involving wind turbines are underreported, but data compiled by the Caithness Windfarm Information Forum indicates that blade failures depict the biggest danger, followed by turbine fires.
Bracing myself against winds that could fling me into the sea if I let my guard down, I try to imagine making the six hundred-foot leap out of a flaming nacelle. If Deepwater Wind’s reticence to debate emergency evacuations is any indicator, I’m not the only one who finds the scenario a bit frightening.
“Three hundred local tradesmen worked on this wind farm,” says Scott Duhamel, a labor activist from Rhode Island’s structure and Construction Trades Council with a thick Boston accent. For him, there’s nothing better than finishing a sizable construction project, and the turbines directly ahead of us are—quite literally—as sizable as they come. “For years, now, they win to drive by and say, ‘I built that, I worked on that, I did that.’ The first one in America.”
A swell of pride at having planted the very first wind turbines in US waters was palpable among everyone I spoke with at on the recent shroud Island Wind Farm tour, which was organized by wind energy supporters at the Rhode Island structure and Construction Trades Council, the BlueGreen Alliance, and the National Wildlife Federation. So was a sense that the momentum generated here needs to live maintained. “We saw a job opportunity,” says Rhode Island senator Joshua Miller, who helped pass legislation that required utilities to buy Deepwater Wind’s electricity. “Whoever was first in this allotment of America was going to set up the platform for [offshore wind] jobs.”
Job creation is often touted as a understanding to support wind energy, even if you don’t saturate about climate change. The reality is that switching to cleanly power at industrial scales is going to require industrial-scale manufacturing and development, such as we’re starting to see in Europe, where most of the shroud Island Wind Farm’s parts were built. The DOE estimates that an offshore wind industry could support 600,000 unique jobs on US shores by 2050.
To Jimmy Shillitto, Vice President for Local 1-2 Utility in unique York, adaptation to the shifting energy landscape is inevitable. “Times are changing,” he says. “If they don’t win involved, we’ll die off.”
Rhode Island may live first out the gates on offshore wind, but other states are poised to entangle up quickly. Over the summer, Massachusetts passed a bill that will require its utilities to purchase 1,600 MW of electricity from offshore wind farms by 2027. The situation of unique York, meanwhile, recently approved a cleanly Energy standard that compels unique York City to draw 50 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2030.“Times are changing. If they don’t win involved, we’ll die off.”
Will the industry entangle on elsewhere in the northeast? According to Kempton, electricity from offshore wind is silent about double the market cost, “which is benevolent of discouraging,” he admits. States that haven’t been keen to pick up some of that cost may live waiting for a signal from the feds—say, a tax credit similar to the soon-expiring production tax credit that’s driven the expense of land-based wind power down. Of course, national energy policies depend entirely on who they elect into office this November and in the years to come.
There’s moreover the issue of actually using the seafloor. The Obama administration has designated 11 wind energy areas in the northeast, but many more are needed for offshore wind energy to get a dent in their carbon pollution. situation governments and energy companies need to execute environmental vetting, to ensure they aren’t structure on top of sensitive habitats, or during key migration periods for birds and whales. These processes buy time.
Looking further into the future, unique technologies will live needed to expand offshore wind into other environments. “On the west coast, the continental shelf gets really profound really fast,” says Jose Zayas, director of the DOE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office. “In the Gulf of Mexico, you’ve got to deal with hurricane survivability. Deepwater Wind, for its part, has already secured rights to another lease area, about 20 miles east of the shroud Island Wind Farm, and is in the process of negotiating a power purchase agreement with Long Island for the first angle of the site’s development, the 90 MW South Fork Wind Farm. If the deal is approved, construction could commence as soon as 2019.
As their boat crests around the craggy southeastern shore of shroud Island, past cliffs and harbors dotted with picturesque unique England homes, the turbines recede from view. The blades, which they could see swaying lazily in the pushover from directly underneath, now show suspended in region against the brilliant blue horizon. Looking back on the wind farm from far away, I’m once again reminded what a diminutive step this is compared with what’s needed to transform their grid and obviate unsafe climate change.
But diminutive steps are how unique ideas buy root. Whether these turbines are the first ambassadors of their gallant unique energy future, or a snoopy blip in the history books, I can’t yet say. We’ll absorb to see how the winds blow.

It may live the lightest electric-assist bicycle of its ilk anywhere. Weighing less than 15 kilograms, it moreover will live EV World's first e-bike offering in more than a decade.
For more than 17 years, I absorb written about other people's electric vehicle projects. This time I going to reveal you about mine.
It's called the K15. Pictured above, at 31.6 lbs. (at least, according to my wife's bathroom scale, which of course, never lies), it is the lightest electric-assist bicycle of its ilk anywhere. I thought EV World readers would find it sharp how it came to live and what my plans are for it.
EV World actually came into actuality because of an electric bicycle. In the summer of 1997, while visiting my local bank, I picked up an feeble copy of traffic Week magazine and came across a two-page advertisement for the Warrior electric bicycle, a collaboration between Dr. Malcolm Currie and Malcolm Bricklin. Currie was the former head of Hughes Electronics and Bricklin, of course, is a serial automotive entrepreneur.
Intrigued, I wrote down the company URL and headed for my local library where they had an ISDN connection: at home, I was silent using a 28.8 dial up at the time. I would spend the next yoke hours learning about the world of electric vehicles, especially the exciting rollout of EVs in California. That topple I decided to launch EV World and attended my first Electric Vehicle Symposium in Orlando, Florida. There I got to drive my first Toyota Prius, introduced in Japan only 12 days earlier, as well as drive GM's EV1 and other electric cars and pickups from the major OEMs. I moreover got to meet a dedicated and fun cadre of EV hobbyists and enthusiasts. On January 1, 1998, EV World.com officially went live.
It was maybe a year later that I bought my first 'electric vehicle,' a Currie folding electric bicycle. In 2000, I bought my first hybrid, a Honda Insight (serial number 984) , which I kept for 10 years, eventually replacing it with a 2009 Prius. My next electric bicycle came through a barter arrangement with Wavecrest Laboratories in McClean, Virginia, who provided me with an early prototype version of their TidalForce M750.
The M750 is silent an extraordinary e-bike. Its 750W rear hub motor is Ninja silent, something that was a revolution for its time in the early 2000s. Based on then state-of-the-art NiMH battery chemistry, it was and remains an extraordinary technological feat. Unfortunately, the company didn't survive, but my M750 has. I silent ride it.
However, it has one major drawback. It is ponderous as hell. nearby to 60 pounds, it's a suffer to lift; but so are most other electric bicycles, which attend to weight in the high-40s, low 50-pound category.
That's why I am so excited about the K15, but structure the lightest e-bike of its benevolent wasn't my original intention.
About two years ago, I heard, via Hannes Neuport of ExtraEnergy in Germany, about the BIKE+ all-in-one motor by ZeHus s.r.l. Here was a compact, 250W hub motor that didn't require an external battery or controller. This was before the explosion of media interest around the Copenhagen Wheel. Intrigued, I started a Skype conversation with Giovanni Alli, one of the co-developers, in Milan, Italy. In the back of my mind, I thought this was a motor that I could execute something with. Exactly what, I wasn't sure.
Over the following months, I kept in paw with Alli and the team at ZeHus, whose roots are in Milan Polytechnic University, periodically reporting on their progress via EV World's newswire.
Then last September, I attended Interbike in Las Vegas and had the haphazard to actually try out the motor on the test track behind Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. I was immensely impressed, not only by the amount of torque and the regenerative braking feature that occurs when you back pedal the bike, but moreover the fact that you control the motor with your smartphone. Yes, there's an app for that, both for iOS and Android.

Last Fall, I decided that I wanted to win ahold of one of the motors to commence testing it in the "real world." Riding around a flat track in Las Vegas isn't the selfsame as the hills here in my hometown. ZeHus agreed to sell me a motor with the understanding that it was for testing purposes and that I was intending to become a manufacturer.
They did me no favors on the cost: I'd paid the plenary expense for it since I was ordering only one unit. I arranged with my local bank to execute a wire transfer to Italy and had DHL airfreight to me. It arrived two days before Christmas.
While I was working on getting the motor, I was moreover looking for a suitable 'mule' on which to install the motor. At first I thought I'd just buy a cheap used bike off Craig's List or from one of a half dozen pawn shops around town. They always look to absorb a stable of used bikes parked out front. ZeHus advised me that I needed to get certain that whichever bike I ended up using, it was vital that the distance between the rear drop-outs, that's where the rear wheel mounts to the frame, was precisely 120 mm. I made a plastic cutout 120 mm in length that I carried around in my wallet to measure various bikes.
However, before I actually bought a bike, someone alerted me to a company in Minneapolis called Greenstar. They had a lovely bamboo and aluminum bike for sale at a very reasonable expense as bamboo bikes go: less than $500. Now that was course more than what I was originally expecting to pay since I was only wanting something on which to test the motor. But the view of a bike made from sustainable bamboo and recycled aluminum really struck a chord with me.
I had previously read William McDonough and Michael Braungart's 'Upcycle,' The sequel of 'Cradle to Cradle,' they bicker that with forethought they can actually create products that win better when they are recycled, or "upcycled." It was about this time that I started to judge about an electric bicycle based on the upcycle principle. I even approached CocaCola with the view of creating electric bicycles from "upcycled" aluminum pop cans and renting them to tourists. The proposal never got past middle management, but the seed had been planted in my mind.
So, when I saw the Greenstar Ecoforce 1, I contacted Eric Hiller in Minneapolis and he agreed to sell me a bike at dealer cost. It arrived two weeks before Christmas.
My first tip-off that I had something special on my hands is when Fedex left the box, unannounced, on my front porch. Used to manhandling my M750 and other conventional, but alittle lighter e-bikes sent to me to test, I expected this bike to live of similar mass. What I picked up was so light that at first I wondered if they'd sent me an empty box. At 20 lbs., the Ecoforce 1 weighs one-third that my M750 does.
Not only was it surprisingly light, it was just downright beautiful. I'd selected the green frame and wheels (the bike moreover is available in white and sky blue) but the green, to me, just sent complete the right signals. Against the warm, honey-toned bamboo, it is just stunning. As one person on my Facebook page commented, "It's not a bike. It's a toil of functional art."
Also, in case you weren't aware, pound-for-pound, bamboo is said to live stronger than steel.
Like most bicycles in the world, this one is made in China to Greenstar's specifications. It is solitary hurry with a hybrid configuration that blends mountain bike-style handlebars with a road bike-type frame. Its lines are cleanly and clutter-free. The wheels are 700C by 23 mm on aluminum rims. It is the essence of minimalism: a flawless blend of contour and function.
Now with both bike and motor now in hand, my next stint was to find a bike shop that would 'lace' the BIKE+ to the rear wheel. Originally, Sarah Johnson, the owner of Omaha Bicycle Company, agreed to execute it in her shop in Benson, but only if the motor arrived before her technician left on an extended bicycle tour across the American southwest. It did, but a death in the family compelled Sarah to nearby her shop on Christmas Eve. So, I picked up the bike and motor and eventually create a shop that would buy on the project. Interestingly, a yoke other shops I called refused to execute it on principle.
"We don't mount motors on bicycles," one of them told me, with a hint of indignation.
But one did, the Bike Rack in west Omaha. Their lead technician, Kelly Smith was terrific to toil with and before unique Years he had the bike ready to go. Before they rolled it out of the shop, he weighed it. His scale said it was just over 32 lbs, or less an 15 kg. I'll near back to the number in a minute.
I got the bike home, took a bunch of digital photos, especially of the motor mounting and emailed them to ZeHus. Almost immediately, I got a reply, asking me if I had installed the locking bracket that came with the motor.
No, I hadn't, I replied. Kelly thought the steel dropouts were plenty stalwart to support the motor.
It is vital that the bracket live installed, ZeHus cautioned me. It is what makes their system work.
Okay. Back I went to the Bike Rack and few days later, Kelly called to notify he'd installed the required bracket.
Near as I can tell, and this allotment is obviously proprietary, making inevitable that the motor can't torque under load is captious to the embedded software algorithms that control the system. In fact, when I installed the newest version of firmware on the motor, I had to insure that the bike was perfectly even during initial set up. I am guessing here, of course, but there must live an inclinometer in the motor that senses the bike's angle of height and uses that to determine when and how much electric assist to provide.
The BIKE+ motor operates in European pedelec mode, sense there is no throttle. You pedal the bike just like a regular bike and sensors determine, based your smartphone app setting, how much assistance to provide, ranging from plenary E-bike mode to no assistance.
The BIKE+ mode, as seen on the above app photo, allows you to ride the bike indefinitely without ever having to plug it in to recharge the battery. judge of like a Toyota Prius. In plenary E-Bike mode, the 160W/h Boston Power lithium cells are apt for at least 10 miles, actually about the orbit of the Prius Plug-In model. You recharge the battery through a diminutive connector housed inside the motor shaft. Your smartphone talks to the motor via Bluetooth, which you activate by a few quick turns of the wheel. The app moreover shows distance traveled, degree of incline, battery-state-of-charge, and speed. You can even lock the motor internally with the app for added security. As long as there's a saturate in the battery pack, which is wrapped around the motor, the bike is going nowhere.
With the bike now assembled, I wanted to start testing it only for the weather here on the considerable Plains to swirl polar for weeks on end. But every now and then, I had the opportunity to let various people ride it to gauge their impressions. Time and again I was told, "Bill, you need to produce this," or "Where can I buy one": the latter just yesterday from two local multimedia producers, who took it around the shroud and came back beaming.
I absorb moreover used the bike to support convince situation and city officials to allow e-bikes that meet federal standards on bike paths where 'motorized vehicles' are not permitted. In fact, the bike is only the second bicycle ever allowed inside the Nebraska situation capitol building, I was told. The first one was a Currie iZip Path that I borrowed from the University of Nebraska Omaha to display to situation legislators during testimony on a bill I helped initiate in 2014. That bill, revived in 2015, was signed into law in late February. It defines qualified e-bikes as "bicycles."
Last week, after showing the K15 to city officials in neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa, their City Council approved a revision to their ordinance moreover now allowing e-bikes on their bike trails.
All this brings me to the conclusion to crowdfund the production of an initial 150 models of the bike, which I am now calling the K15 because it weighs under 15 kilograms and because 'BambooZal' just didn't click for me, for obvious reasons.
The view is to exhaust the bike as a course to support fund the evolution of my first Q•Pod electric bicycle rental pop-up shop. I'll reveal you more about that project in the future. The K15 will live one of the 'premiums' offered to crowdfunders. I hope to launch the push this coming month.
Yesterday, I used North Sea Film's white stage to shot silent photos, which you can see here, as well as B-roll video footage of the bike. Monday they shoot the crowdfunding video. My goal is to raise $300,000, most of which I hope to generate by taking orders for the K15s. After delivering the first 150 bikes, I aim is to absorb enough left over to transfigure their first repurposed shipping container into a solar-powered rental shop.
As you may live aware, some crowdfunding campaigns absorb been wildly successful: Sondor raising an astounding $5.3 million for a Chinese-made corpulent jade cruiser. I don't hope that even of response, especially since the K15 isn't being billed as the 'cheapest' electric bike. What it is, is maybe the lightest e-bike of its benevolent anywhere.
